Questions we are often asked about the Business service.

Can you help me start my business ?  

Yes, the Library’s experienced advisors are trained to support you in starting up a business. They can help you transform your entrepreneurial ideas into a viable business proposition. Resources such as databases, workshops and business planning templates are available in the Library as well as online. The initial starting point is to attend the Enterprise Club. 1-1 interviews with experienced advisers will discuss your initial business idea and advise you on the most appropriate course of action.  

What funding is available to help me set up and start my business?  

The Library offers free advice on all matters regarding the funding options for your business, from grants to loans, including the process of applying for these.    

What resources and facilities do you have to create a Business Plan?    

The Library has many resources to help you create a Business Plan. Our Advisors can help plan your business in one-to-one meetings and services such as the weekly Enterprise Club). This offers free advice on business planning.
  There are also a range of seminars, workshops and business templates available throughout the year offering specialist business planning advice and help.

Where do I obtain Patent, Copyright, Trade Mark, and Design advice?      

The Library is unique in offering free advice on intellectual property (IP) issues.  Trained Advisors as well as a local Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) lawyer are available for free short consultations. A range of workshops also take place regularly. Booking is essential. Go to What's Happening and filter by Business.      

Can you create a Mailing List?      

Yes. Mailing Lists can be compiled to your specific business requirements from a range of databases. Basic Mailing Lists can be done in person but more complex Mailing Lists can be compiled for you by specialist business staff. Charges apply for all Mailing Lists.

Do you provide (free) legal advice?      

Yes, legal guidance on employment, tax, intellectual property, benefits, debt, consumer rights and other legislation is available. This is through a weekly clinic held in partnership with LawWorks. Some services are only available to Library members.

Can I access business databases?

Free access to business databases is available at the Library. These include company searches, credit checks and other financial information on all UK limited companies and some non-limited companies. The Library team can carry out research for you if required (charges apply).      

Do you run business workshops and seminars in the Library?

Free business events take place regularly throughout the year at the Library, covering many different areas (both general and specialist).

I need to market research my business – how do I do this?

The Library’s Business and Learning service offers free access to a huge range of market-specific research databases. If required, we can carry out research on your behalf (charges apply).
