Frequently asked questions about learning resources in the Library of Birmingham

I need to market research my business – how do I do this?

The Library puts on regular workshops and seminars held by experienced tutors in CV writing, as well as writing application forms and interview techniques. A CV Surgery takes place weekly (booking required) as well as a weekly Work Club for initial guidance (just drop-in). These will be starting soon.   There are a number of easy-to-use templates for writing CVs available on this website under eLibrary. Ask in the Library for details of workshops and other services.

How can I improve my English?  

The Library offers a wide selection of books, CDs and other resources on learning English. Also available are ‘English for Speakers of Other Languages’ (ESOL) and ‘International English Language Testing System’ (IELTS) Qualifications. This is an effective and free way to use our resources to improve your English. The qualification includes practice tests and ‘Life in the UK’ resources.

I need to market research my business – how do I do this?

Dedicated PCs within the Business and Learning section are available for job searching. By attending the weekly Work Club, which starts on Thursday 3 October 2013, 10am-2pm, information and advice can be given on all aspects of finding work. Specialist job search seminars and workshops are available throughout the year. Go to What's Happening and filter by Business.

Do you have learning resources for…..?    

Whether you are looking to improve your reading, writing or numeracy skills, learn English as a second language, learn a foreign language, learn British Sign Language, or just want to brush up your computer skills, Business and Learning has a wide variety of learning resources covering many subject areas.

I need to improve my interview technique.  Can you help? What resources do you have?    

A wide range of resources in various formats are available for loan to support you in improving your interview technique. There are also helpful hints and tips on our website.

I want to change careers but unsure where to start – can you advise me?    

Our qualified Business and Learning staff can offer impartial information, advice and guidance on learning and work matters. We also have career profiling software to support you in your career change. There are also a range of resources within our extensive Job Library available for loan.

What qualifications do I need to be a  . . . ?  

Resources are available to identify what qualifications you need to start on your chosen career path. If you are working in the UK and have qualifications from abroad, we also have an international comparisons database so that you can see what your overseas qualifications equate to in the UK.

Do you run ICT courses in the Library?    

Yes, there are a wide range of ICT courses regularly held in the Library. There are courses tailored to all levels of ICT proficiency, from complete beginner to advanced user. Courses are led by trained specialists and take place in a friendly environment. Do you have information on Adult Education, University and College courses ? 

Business and Learning have a wide range of University prospectuses with detailed information on all courses offered.
  We are also a UCAS Online Registration Centre and PCs are available to carry out course searches. Our Job Library also contains a wide range of resources to support University applications and help writing that all important Personal Statement. Adult Education Directories are readily available throughout the year.
