You can join in person at any public library in Birmingham or you can join online if you are over 16.
At the Library of Birmingham you can use our self-service information points, which are a quick and easy way to become a library member. You can use them to join the library, search the library catalogue and book a computer
You will usually be able to borrow books and music recordings straight away and your library card can be used at ALL Birmingham public libraries.
You will be able to borrow 10 books or talking books and 8 music CDs (where available) which you can keep items for 4 weeks except for CDs (2 weeks)
Other items where available 5 DVDs and 4 CD-Roms. Please note that language CDs may have different terms and conditions. You can keep Top Title DVDs for 2 nights and all other DVDs for up to a week.You can keep CD-ROMs for 1 week.
You will usually have to pay to borrow talking books, music CDs, CD-Roms and DVDs. (Please ask staff about concessions and special offers.)
What you need to bring with you when you join
If you are 16 or over, you must provide one proof of name and address. If you are a student studying in Birmingham you will need to provide both proof of your home address and proof of your temporary address.
If you already have a library card then there's no need for you to rejoin. Your account may have expired and all you will need to do is present your existing card along with one of the proofs of identity listed below.
If you move or change any of your details then you need to let us know. Some details can be changed online through the catalogue and My Account. Change of address has to be done at your local library as proof of your new address has to be shown.

What we ask of you when you use the Library
To bring your library card with you to borrow items from the library.
To bring items back on time. You will have to pay a charge for items brought back late. (If you are receiving any benefits, you will probably be eligible for concessions.)
To be responsible for all items borrowed on your library card.
You will be charged for items that are lost or damaged.
Your library card may not be used by anyone else
You can renew most items (up to a maximum of 3 times) in person, by telephone, or online through My Account. If you telephone please have your library card and the items to hand. If an item is reserved you will not be able to renew it. When renewing an item please give yourself enough time to return the item if it cannot be renewed so you do not incur late charges.
To reserve an item you will need to be a library member. Search the online catalogue then select Reserve Selections. You will be prompted for your card number and PIN if you are not already logged in. You then need to choose your Pickup Location. This is the Birmingham Library from which you want to collect your item.
The rest of the choices are optional:
Titles Required: if you have reserved more than one copy of they same title but you only require one then set this to 1.
Not required after: this is set to 3 months, if you have not received your reservation after 3 months the system will automatically cancel it. You can change this to which ever option is appropriate.
