When Assistant Manager of Birmingham's Theatre Royal Philip Rodway died in 1932, his will specified that the Theatre's play texts collection should go to R. Crompton Rhodes, a local historian and drama critic. He died unexpectedly in 1935, and the collection came to the Central Library ‘at Mr. Rodway’s privately expressed desire.’

Sadly, library records do not give any further information as to the origins of Crompton Rhodes' extensive fashion plate collection. It is imagined that his great passion for the arts and theatre lead to an interest in the history of British and French costume design.
