Sharing stories and using the library can help turn your little one into a big reader, talker and thinker.
Are You Sitting Comfortably?
You are your child's favourite person! Your child loves to be the very centre of your attention, so sharing quiet time and a story together can be a joyful experience. So, choose a favourite library book, find a comfortable place to sit and snuggle up for a story!
You are a storyteller! Children love to hear stories that have been passed down through the family. The stories you heard when you were a child are part of your culture and are perfect for sharing with your child. And if you can't remember all the words, don't worry! Traditional tales from around the world are available at your local library.
Just Like Me
Birmingham Libraries offer children's books in over 50 languages and in a variety of different formats. Many children will be able to choose stories which are written in their first language and feature characters who look like them.
Night Songs and Lullabies
Parents across the world have been singing songs to soothe and calm babies to sleep for many centuries. Birmingham Libraries offer a wide selection of lullabies and bedtime stories in books and on cd for you to borrow and share with your baby.
When A Book Might Help
Books can help with all sorts of difficulties faced by children and families. By sharing a story based on a particular theme, you can gently introduce new concepts to your child and tackle their fears in a safe way. By discussing what happened in the story and how the characters behaved, children can explore the issues and gain coping skills and new understanding.
I Can Read!
As your child grows, so too does the range of books that are available to them. Birmingham Libraries hold many thousands of high-quality, fiction and non-fiction books written for children. Regular visits to the library will help your child grow to be a confident reader and independant library user.
