Library of Birmingham is a partner for NHS Books on Prescription. Your doctor can prescribe books to help you with health issues such as anxiety, stress and obsessive compulsive disorder. Bring your prescription to the Library to borrow the books you have been prescribed.
Library of Birmingham and community libraries across the city support the Reading Agency’s national Dementia Offer with a collection of specialised resources to support dementia carers and sufferers. These resources include books that explain the advance of the condition and caring strategies, material to stimulate memory and discussion of day-to-day subjects, moving personal journeys through dementia and its care. Included is some specially written material for younger people to help them to understand what dementia is and how it may impact upon their relationships with friends and family members.
Relaxing at the Library of Birmingham
Amid the hustle and bustle of the big city, the Library is a great place to relax with friends, unwind with a good book or find a quiet place calm the mind. There are comfortable spaces to sit on every floor, and our beautiful garden terraces are green havens with wonderful views high above the busy streets. For quiet thought or prayer, you are welcome to use the Contemplation Room (Level 2).

Children’s health and well-being
Library of Birmingham has a range of resources to help parents support their children’s health and well-being. ‘When a Book Might Help’ is a collection of stories that can help children of all ages cope with sometimes difficult life experiences. Topics include:
Medical matters such as visiting hospital
Living with conditions such as autism and Tourette’s
The Parents’ Collection provides a wealth of information on all of these topics and more, including course books for childcare students and you will find both collections conveniently placed next to each other in the Children’s Library. We also stock Teen Health resources which cover a wide range of health issues including smoking, drugs, alcohol, puberty, mental health, sexuality and bullying.
