Hi my name's Lauren Williams, I’m in year 11 and I attend the Birmingham Ormiston Academy for creative arts where I am on the Acting course. I am the ninth Young Poet Laureate 2013/2014, I always try and find an opportunity to tell people that and often it's followed by a big cheesy smile. Since I found out I won the YPL I smile till my checks hurt or I start to twitch awkwardly, you can tell how I feel about winning from that reaction!
On 3 October I was officially appointed YPL on National Poetry Day. On the morning I recorded a show for BBC Radio 4 which was aired in the evening, It was a comparison interview between me and the London young poet laureate however considering she was 25 and I'm only 15 there were obvious differences between us. After when I went back to school I performed my water themed poem in front of the year 10s, I think they liked it because the applause sounded quite genuine otherwise my talent may be based on lies! In the evening I was given an award and had my photo taken, It was strange because I was asked for my autograph and since I've never really signed anything before I just wrote my name (Awkward), I did a few interviews as well so by the end of the night I found it hard to adjust my face from a permanent smile and to stop giggling!
Since my appointment as the Young Birmingham Poet Laureate (*BIG Cheesy Smile*) I've performed at the Houses of Parliament, a part of Birmingham day, alongside other students from my school and other establishments representing Birmingham, this was a very exciting experience and an opportunity for me to represent young people in Birmingham and voice my opinions through poetry, a highlight was when we came out of the train station and on our way to parliament the queen just casually drove past!
I have also featured on BBC news, they filmed me at my school reciting my "war themed" poem "Too Many" and that aired on the morning before I went to parliament and later in the evening I featured on ITV news because of Birmingham day. I quite enjoyed being filmed because of my Acting at my school and the fact that poetry and acting complement each other although it was odd having them film my hand gestures.
During the half term I went to Peters book store where I spent my £100 book voucher, most people won’t be bothered about winning money to spend on books but Peters is amazing and I love reading it's the perfect escapism, and as an actor I love making up the characters as I'd perform them (I've actually read half the books already and they were pretty thick #sad-life). Recently I went to the library for a mini photo-shoot it was kind of awkward posing when loads of people were walking around browsing for books, however I really enjoyed striking cheesy poses with books lol. Well that just about makes me up to date with everything I've been doing, stay tuned folks for more about life as the ninth Young Poet laureate.
Thanks again to everyone involved in giving me this amazing opportunity.
